Research Summary (see below for details): ECGC (the active component of Green Tea) can accelerate weight loss; however, expect to see bigger results with a tape measure than a scale and the biggest results from long term use of EGCg.  Also, EGCg combined with caffeine may be the most effective combination.

EGCg may promote weight loss by increasing the metabolism of fats by the liver (thermogenic effect) and  inhibiting lipase (fat absorption enzyme) in the digestive tract.

A double blind study showed that only EGCg was associated with weight and fat loss (not the other green tea catechins).

A Japanese epidemiological study indicates habitual green tea consumption corresponded to lower % Body Fat and smaller waist to hip ratios.  The study grouped people into two groups: those who habitually drank at least one cup of green tea per week and those who didn't.  The group who habitually drank at least 1 cup of green tea per week had 19.6% less body fat than those who didn't.  The study also found that higher green tea consumption was associated with lower body fat.

A double blind study indicated EGCg consumption increased fat oxidation by an additional 241 fat calories/day.  Study participants took 270 mg EGCg per day plus 150 mg caffeine.

A double blind study reported the effect of 690 mg green tea catechins  per day over a 12 week period. EGCg consumption was associated with a weight loss of 2.4 pounds, a body fat loss of 7.7%, and a loss of 1 inch around the waist.

Double-blind study with 80 subjects found that the group receiving 588 catechins per day day showed a significant weight loss of 3.7 lbs in 12 weeks

Double blind Japanese study of dieters showed that a high catechin intake  resulted in a significant decrease in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat ratio, abdominal fat, glucose, insulin and total cholestrol while a low catechin intake only reduced weight, body mass index and insulin.
